First World War British War Medal awarded to 3838 Corporal Edward Frank McNaughton, D Company 10th. Battalion Australian Infantry. Born in Spring Vale, Victoria, Australia. A clerk by trade, McNaughton joined the Army in August 1915. He served in Egypt in 1916 and later in France and Flanders. During the battle of Polygon Wood in Belgium McNaughton was killed in action. Around 6.40am on the 20th. September 1917, 20 to 30 minutes after the German barrage commenced he was killed when a shell burst close to him, just off Glencorse Wood (about 3-4 miles from Ypres). Medal is on original long ribbon and comes with 57 pages of service papers.
