(Casualty).The W prefix on the service number indicates Western Australia and the X is for a volunteer for overseas service with the 2nd. Australian Imperial Force. William McDowall was born in 1910 and died on the 25th. of July 1942 in North Africa. Remembered with honour Alexandria (Hardra) War Memorial, Egypt. He was the son of S and J.C. McDowall of Glasgow. These medals were awarded to Australian Forces who had served 18 months full time service or 3 years part time service during WW2, the qualification period was reduced in the 1990’s.
